France's Hollande to receive Morsi in a week: Élysée

Ahram Online, Saturday 26 Jan 2013

Talks between the French and Egyptian heads of state will be the first since Morsi took power last summer

The French government has announced that President Francois Hollande will host Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi next Friday at the Élysée presidential palace.

The visit will mark the first meeting between the French and Egyptian leaders since the latter's tenure started last July.

The French-Egyptian talks are expected to revolve around consolidating relations between the two nations, as well as a number of international and regional issues, including the Syrian crisis, Iran's nuclear programme, and the French intervention in Mali.

The announcement comes in light of heightened international reactions to the situation in Egypt. Protests commemorating the January 25 Revolution on Friday were frought with clashes while further clashes erupted Saturday nationwide when an Egyptian court handed 21 defendants death sentences for the killing of 74 Ahly football fans during a match 1 February, 2012.
