A Bangladesh court has begun handing down sentences for a bloody 2009 mutiny that killed 74 people, including 57 military commanders.

So far, 47 people have been given sentences of up to 10 years in prison.

Another 799 people, mostly border guards, were still to be sentenced Tuesday by the court in Dhaka, the capital.

The verdicts came amid tight security outside the court.

The February 2009 mutiny was staged over pay and other grievances. The paramilitary border guards were led by military commanders, and the influential military was unhappy over the response of the government, which did not allow troops to attack the border guards' headquarters in Dhaka where the military commanders were killed.
