Senior British politician Lord Alistair McAlpine, who was wrongly implicated in a child sex abuse scandal, has died aged 71, his family said on Saturday.

McAlpine, who was treasurer of Britain's Conservative party when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister in the 1980s, died in Italy on Friday.

"It is with great sadness that the family of Lord McAlpine announce his peaceful death last night at his home in Italy," the family said in a statement.

In 2012, the BBC was forced to pay McAlpine £185,000 ($294,000, 229,000 euros) in damages over a news report that led to him being wrongly accused of child sex abuse.

The false allegations rocked the BBC, forcing director-general George Entwistle to quit.

Prime Minister David Cameron, leader of the Conservatives, paid tribute to McAlpine, describing him as "a dedicated supporter of Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative party".
