Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Wednesday met for several hours with the three main leaders of the opposition for talks as fighting raged in Kiev, the presidency said.
Alongside powerful national security council secretary Andriy Klyuyev, Yanukovych met with opposition politician Arseniy Yatsenyuk, former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko and ultra-nationalist Oleg Tyagnybok.
In a statement, the presidency said the meeting lasted three hours and described it as a "first step" in the negotiating process, without giving further details.
All the opposition leaders left the presidential administration without making any comment, the Interfax news agency said.
