Police in Brazil fatally shot nine members of a gang as they tried to get the money from an automatic teller machine, press reports said Saturday.

The daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported on its online edition that five other members of the group were arrested and another escaped.

The incident occurred late Saturday in southern Minas Gerais state, located in Brazil's southeast.

Authorities had been carrying out a months-long search to capture the gang, which tried to steal cash from bank machines by blowing them up.
