Violence escalates as Nigeria struggles to hold parliamentary polls

The death toll from a bomb blast at an electoral office hours before Nigeria began Saturday's parliamentary polls has risen to 11, an emergency management official said.

"The death toll is 11," Ishaya Chonoko, an official with the National Emergency Management Agency, told AFP, adding that 38 people were wounded.

Police had previously announced a toll of eight dead and 26 wounded.

The blast on Friday evening hit an electoral office in Suleija, near the capital Abuja. Officials postponed the election in Suleija as a result of the attack.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.
