Electricity blackouts have increased in Egypt in recent days as temperatures soared, with some households in Cairo reporting several power cuts daily.

The electricity minister in a statement on Friday said that the power cuts are due to high temperatures, fuel shortages and technical failures, in addition to attempts to sabotage the grid, without giving further details.

Blackouts had decreased during the month of Ramadan which ended last week, partially due to cooler-than-average weather for the time of year.

The government raised household electricity prices in July in an effort to reduce consumption.

Power cuts have become frequent in recent years, but were generally confined to summer months when air conditioning increases the demand for power until the winter of 2012/13 when blackouts during cold weather became common.
