EgyptAir announced on Thursday the suspension of its flights to Osaka starting 20 October, Al-Ahram’s Arabic website reported.
The decision came in response to the decision by the Japanese government to maintain an official travel warning advising citizens against travel to Egypt. EgyptAir’s travel operations in Japan depend primarily on transporting Japanese tourists to Egypt.
EgyptAir, which suspended flights between Cairo and Tokyo in July, has begun procedures to reduce operations in Japan.
The tourism sector, which accounts for about 9 percent of GDP in Egypt, has received several blows since the 2011 revolution. Prolonged periods of unrest and sporadic violence have led many countries to warn their citizen against travelling to Egypt.
The presidency declared a state of emergency was on 14 August amid clashes that followed the violent dispersal of two protest camps in support of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo. Ongoing violence left hundreds dead.
North Sinai has been the site of violent confrontation between Egyptian security forces and suspected jihadist groups, with dozens killed on both sides.
