Egypt to double gold production next year, says petroleum minister

Egypt's gold production is set to double, reaching 12 tons in 2011.

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmy has said that local gold production will increase from 5.5 tons to 12 tons next year.

Egypt's sole gold mine commenced production two years ago. Fahmy added that the mine has produced 0.25 tons during this last week. In contrast, Egypt produced a meagre seven tons of gold during the whole previous century.
