A top Jordanian businessman convicted of corruption but allowed to leave prison for medical treatment in the United States is due to be brought back to the kingdom on Wednesday, the Petra news agency reported.
"Khalid Shahin will return to Jordan... Wednesday evening, accompanied by a Jordanian foreign ministry official and Public Security Department officer," Abdullah Abu Rumman told the state-run news agency.
"Shahin will be handed over to the authorities in order to complete his prison sentence."
In October, Shahin was sentenced with others, including a former minister, to three years in jail for corruption, involving graft payments on 2.1-billion-dollar project to upgrade the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Co, which runs the kingdom's sole refinery.
The government allowed Shahin to travel to the United States for medical treatment, but he was spotted in a London restaurant in April, causing an outcry in Jordan.
"Jordan has made intensified diplomatic and legal efforts as well as direct contacts with Shahin to ensure his return," said Abu Rumman who is also government spokesman. The justice and health ministers resigned in May over the issue.
