Qatar: Energy supplies safe despite Mideast unrest

Emirate's ruler says the region's major energy producers will make every effort to ensure energy supplies keep flowing in times of crisis

Qatar's ruler is seeking to assure energy consumers that the unrest roiling the Arab world this year will not affect supplies of oil and natural gas.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani says the events of the Arab Spring are a reminder of concerns about energy security in the Middle East. But the emir says the region's major energy producers will "exert every effort" to ensure energy supplies continue to flow, especially in time of crisis.

The emir made the comments Monday at the start of a petroleum conference in the Gulf nation's capital Doha.

Qatar is a member of OPEC and sits atop the world's third-largest gas reserves.
