The United States has pledged $100 million to the Tunisian government to help it meet its debt obligations for the year, Tunisian state media said on Thursday.

The pledge was given by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a telephone conversation with the Tunisian prime minister on Wednesday as part of Washington's efforts to support the transition to democracy after last year's revolution ousted veteran dictator Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali.

"The U.S. administration... agreed direct financial support worth $100 million to the Tunisian state that will be dedicated to meeting Tunisia's debt obligations for the year," Tunisia's official TAP news agency reported.

It also quoted the United States promising to encourage other countries to take similar steps.
