Country expects largest harvest in decades, says agriculture minister

Tunisia expects to produce 2.5 million tonnes of grain this year, up from 2.3 million tonnes last year and the biggest harvest in decades, Agriculture Minister Mohammed Ben Salem said on Monday.

"Our projections for the grain harvest this year are very good.... We expect [2.5 million tonnes] and the harvest could well be bigger than this," he told Reuters in an interview.

Ben Salem said durum wheat would account for around half the yield from the harvest, which begins in mid-June.

Ben Salem also said that Tunisia was ready to lease at least 10,000 hectares of agricultural land this year to foreign investors working in joint ventures with Tunisian businesses.
