Egypt’s CBE announces 2-day bank holiday for Easter, Sham El-Nessim

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has announced that banks operating in Egypt will be closed on Sunday and Monday, 16-17 April, to mark the Christian holiday of Easter and the Egyptian spring festival of Sham El-Nessim.

"On the occasion of Easter and Sham El-Nessim holidays, all banks operating in Egypt will be closed on Sunday and Monday, with work resuming on Tuesday, 18 April, 2023," the CBE said in its statement issued on Sunday.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced on Wednesday that Monday 17 April is an official paid holiday to celebrate Sham El-Nessim.

Next week the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church and other Orthodox churches celebrate Easter according to the Julian Calendar.
