Egyptian pound weakens past EGP 49 against USD for 1st time in 9 months

The Egyptian pound weakened past EGP 49 against the US dollar for the first time in nine months on Monday, driven by regional tensions, according to data from the Central Bank of Egypt and several commercial banks.

The US dollar reached EGP 49.17 for buying and EGP 49.27 for selling this Monday, up by EGP 0.47, or 0.9 percent, from EGP 48.7 and EGP 48.8, respectively.

Similar rates were recorded at banks including CIB, Banque Misr, QNB, Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait, and Suez Canal Bank.

The greenback has gained around EGP 1.3, or 2.6 percent, since last Thursday, when it stood at EGP 47.6 for buying and EGP 47.9 for selling, ahead of the recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran and related attacks across several Middle Eastern countries, including Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and Qatar.

Around midday on Monday, the dollar briefly rose to about EGP 49.7 for buying and EGP 49.8 for selling, with Crédit Agricole Bank posting the highest rate. An hour later, it eased slightly to about EGP 49.2 for buying and EGP 49.3 for selling at CIB, Banque Misr, and the National Bank of Egypt.

The last time the dollar traded in the EGP 49 range was in June 2025, before rising above EGP 50 and then falling back to around EGP 49 by the end of the month, according to CBE data.

Other currencies

The euro rose by about EGP 1.24, or 2.2 percent, to EGP 57.7 for buying and EGP 57.8 for selling, up from EGP 56.5 and EGP 56.6, respectively, last Thursday.

The British pound increased by EGP 1.1, or 1.7 percent, to EGP 65.8 for buying and EGP 66 for selling, compared to EGP 64.7 and EGP 64.9.

The Saudi riyal gained EGP 0.33, or 2.6 percent, to EGP 13.09 for buying and EGP 13.13 for selling, up from EGP 12.7 and EGP 12.8.

The Kuwaiti dinar rose by EGP 4.16, or about 2.7 percent, to EGP 160.7 for buying and EGP 161.3 for selling, compared with EGP 156.6 and EGP 157.1.

Rates for the Omani riyal, Bahraini dinar, and Jordanian dinar also increased over the weekend.
