The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) on Wednesday dismissed reports claiming that new paper banknotes in the 25-piastre, 50-piastre and EGP 1 denominations have been issued.

In a statement, the CBE said no new paper editions of these denominations are currently being printed.

The bank clarified that the paper notes currently in circulation are from previous issuances and remain legal tender. They will continue to circulate in the Egyptian market until they reach the end of their operational lifespan and are gradually withdrawn through the normal cash cycle.

The CBE added that official reports on currency in circulation include the cumulative total of paper notes issued since these denominations were first introduced, all of which remain valid alongside their metallic counterparts.

It also noted that any new issuances of the 25-, 50- and 100-piastre denominations in recent years have been coins only, not paper currency.

The central bank urged the public not to be misled by inaccurate information circulating online and to verify information through official sources before sharing it.
