Hundreds of angry Egyptian protesters threw stones towards Canal Company for Electricity Distribution branch in the Suez Canal area in Port Said coastal city. One of the buildings of the company caught fire, ONTV reporter said on Saturday.
The fire was however limited, according to pictures published on online social networks from Port Said.
The official spokesman of the electricity company affirmed that protesters threw stones at the company building, adding he heard nothing about the fire.
Ahmed Imam, the minister of electricity, said that some of the protesters have started to leave the location.
The ministry called on Port Said residents to not attack the ministry's facilities in the city early Saturday, as it might result in a power outage in the city.
“The building contains the main electricity panel of Port Said. If it stops working, a main part of the city, if not all of it, will think in the dark," Aktham Abolela, spokesman of the ministry said.
Clashes have erupted earlier Saturday in Port Said between angry protesters and security forces surrounding the Port Said General Prison after a court announced a death sentence to 21 local football fans convicted of attacking and killing opposition Ahly fans during a football match.
The minister of electricity has announced earlier this week a state of emergency for all the electricity companies in Egypt on 25 and 26 January.
All leaves for the heads of companies were cancelled and orders were given to reinforce security measures around all electricity company branches in Egypt.
