Egypt's deposed president Hosni Mubarak reimbursed the state LE4 million (approx. $500,000) in recompense for gifts he had been granted illegally – alongside his wife and youngest son Gamal – from the state's ministry of information, a senior judicial official told Ahram Online.
Mustafa El-Husseini, the head of Egypt's Public Funds Prosecution, said that the repayment by Mubarak and his family came after representatives of Egypt's Public Prosecution moved on Wednesday to Tora Prison, where Mubarak and his two sons are imprisoned, to negotiate the settlement.
In January, Mubarak paid LE18 million (approx. $2.8 million) compensation for gifts that he had received, along with members of his immediate family, from the state-owned Al-Ahram Press and Publishing Organisation.
The deposed leader has also paid LE11 million (approx. $1.5 million) compensation for illegal gifts from other state-owned publishing organisations.
