El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, and National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) Executive President Mohamed Shamroukh, according to the presidency.
The meeting reviewed government plans to develop the telecommunications sector and strengthen Egypt’s knowledge-based economy, with a focus on expanding network coverage and upgrading digital infrastructure nationwide.
Officials briefed the president on efforts to continue expanding mobile and internet services across cities, villages, and underserved areas. El-Sisi directed authorities to study opportunities to develop data centres and cloud computing services, expand local manufacturing of telecommunications equipment, and put in place mechanisms to support domestically produced technology.
The discussions also covered the implementation status of national digital infrastructure projects, including the replacement of copper networks with fibre-optic cables and the expansion of mobile tower construction to improve service quality.
Talaat said the ministry has recently launched several new services, including 5G mobile technology, which he described as a major upgrade to network speed and performance across multiple regions.
He also cited the rollout of WiFi Calling services, which he said has improved call quality in areas with weak or limited coverage.
Talaat said the NTRA has opened a Radio Spectrum Monitoring Centre to manage and monitor spectrum usage using fixed and mobile wireless systems designed to measure spectrum occupancy with high precision.
The minister said the telecommunications sector posts the highest growth rates in Egypt’s economy for the seventh consecutive year, averaging between 14 and 16 percent, and now contributes about 6 percent of gross domestic product.
He added that private sector companies play a central role in implementing the sector’s expansion plans.
