The agreement will enable SWCC to export its white cement products to different countries around the world through the new terminal, which will be built and operated by TCI with an expected annual capacity exceeding 200,000 tons.

"This project aligns with our commitment to supporting Egyptian exports by providing specialized logistics solutions across several industries…we anticipate cost savings for cement producers in Egypt, making prices more globally competitive and increasing global market penetration," stated CEO of TCI Mohamed El-Ahwal.

Egypt is a key exporter of white cement worldwide. Through this project, SWCC aims to expand its footprint in global export markets, achieving significant export growth over the next five years, said SWCC’s Managing Director Alberto Barbieri.

SWCC is a subsidiary of the world's largest white cement player, Aalborg Portland Group, which is controlled by Cementir Holding NV, and the main cement producer in Egypt and operating one of the world's largest white cement plants.

TCI is a 45-year-old Egyptian terminal operator and a proud subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports Group. The company specializes in container, bulk, break bulk and project cargo handling, storage, and trucking and operates out of four Egyptian ports today: Adabiya, Sokhna, Safaga and Port Said.

According to the Egyptian Business Directory, there are currently 18 cement companies operating in Egypt, accounting for one percent of the GDP and almost 10 percent of its manufacturing GDP. The sector experienced a remarkable 33 percent year-on-year surge in cement exports during the first five months of 2023, reaching a value of $380 million.

*An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that TCI is an Egyptian company, however the company is now a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Ports Group
