Iran aims to double its gas imports from Turkmenistan, an official in the Iranian Oil Ministry said Sunday.

The announcement comes nearly a week after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Turkmenistan counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimohamedov opened the second phase of a pipeline to transport gas between the two countries, at the city of Sarakhas in southeastern Iran.

Iran intends to increase its imports of natural gas from Turkmenistan from 20 million to 40 million cubic metres per day, according to Iranian channel Press TV.

It is reported that the new pipeline will be capable of transferring 18 million cubic metres of gas per day.
