"Green hydrogen is crucial to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and boosting the green energy transition, and it will become a key global source of energy in the near future," Shaker explained.
The minister's remarks came during his speech at the 2023 Global Energy Interconnection Conference (GEIC), held in Shanghai, China, on 25-27 September to develop global plans for energy, climate, the environment, and sustainable development.
The national strategy will leverage Egypt's competitive capabilities to achieve its ambitious plans in the hydrogen sector, targeting up to 8% of the global tradable market by 2040, stated Shaker.
He added that green hydrogen production can also support Egyptian industrial energy needs while reducing dependence on petroleum imports.
Towards green energy transition
Egypt recently approved the National Strategy for Integrated Sustainable Energy, which aims to have 42% of Egyptian energy generated from renewable sources by 2035, Shaker noted.
The energy strategy is currently being updated to include a new 2040 deadline, taking into account developments in renewable energy technologies, energy storage advancements, and the emerging focus on hydrogen, he added.
Additionally, the minister stated that 26,500 square kilometres have been allocated for renewable energy projects, capable of generating 128 gigawatts of solar and wind energy.
