The power outage crisis in Egypt is expected to end during the next six months, the parliament’s Energy and Environment Committee Head Talaat El Sewedy stated on Monday.

El Sewedy stressed that providing electricity to citizens is a top priority, adding that the government is currently on its way to solving this problem.

The Energy and Environment Committee oversees electricity, petroleum, and environment ministries and follows up on implementing the government’s programme (2024-2026).

El Sewedy praised the government's current plan to solve the electricity shortage crisis.

"The president has directed the new ministers to solve the problem of electricity cuts one way or another,” he added.

In 2023, the government implemented a two-hour-per-day power cut in a load-shedding programme amid rising consumption, which increased pressure on energy resources and power plants.

This summer, amid gruelling heatwaves, the government extended the power cuts to three hours to deal with shortages.

However, earlier in July, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said his new cabinet would implement an emergency plan to end the power cut within six months.

The cabinet plan includes importing $1.18 billion in mazut and natural gas to end shortages in operating power plants.

In addition, Egypt plans to invest $1.2 billion to drill 110 exploratory gas and oil wells during FY2024/2025.
