In June, the ministry contracted 21 LNG shipments to provide the fuel needed for power plants and the load-shedding programme to solve Egypt's natural gas shortage crisis.

Five of these shipments have arrived and are currently residing in Sumed and Aqaba ports, with a capacity of 155 thousand m2 on two regasification vessels (regasification is the process of using heat to transform LNG into a gas form).

According to the statement, the remainder of the shipments will arrive following an approved receipt schedule.

Egypt has been suffering from an electricity crisis over the last period, leading the government to introduce a load-shedding programme in July 2023 to lessen the impact of the crisis amid the increased strain on the nation’s gas network given the scorching heatwaves.

In addition, many prominent fertilizers companies halted operation at the beginning of July due to gas shortages, including The Alexandria Fertilizers Company, Abu Qir Fertilizers, Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO), Egyptian Chemical Industries Company (KIMA), and Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals (SIDPEC).

In June, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that Egypt would import natural gas at a value of $1.18 billion to cease electricity outages starting the third week of July till the end of summer.
