The event brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, academia, and international organizations to discuss pathways for Egypt's clean energy transition, particularly in the green hydrogen sector.

Representatives of various ministries, energy companies, development organizations, and financial institutions participated in the dialogue, aiming to explore the challenges facing green hydrogen projects and find solutions for accelerating their implementation.

The discussions revolved around coordination between stakeholders, infrastructure development, legal frameworks, and technology gaps that are impeding the growth of green hydrogen initiatives in Egypt.

According to Hossam Allam, regional director of CEDARE’s Sustainable Growth Programme, CEDARE and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation have been consistently working to facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues. He highlighted the importance of collaborative approaches to achieving Egypt's renewable energy goals.

“We believe in the value of exchanging information and sharing viewpoints among various stakeholders to maximize the benefits of mega projects in renewable energy. We aim to develop smooth mechanisms for Egypt’s transition to sustainable energy and to position the country as a regional hub for exporting clean energy,” said Allam.

He further noted that the dialogue focused on addressing obstacles, such as limited technologies, lack of skilled workforce, and challenges related to infrastructure, storage, and production.

Ronja Schiffer, resident representative of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Egypt, echoed similar sentiments, stating that Friedrich Ebert Foundation has long been working with CEDARE to promote socio-ecological transformation and climate change initiatives.

"Egypt has significant potential in the green hydrogen field, but there are challenges that need to be tackled to meet these expectations. This is why we are here today," Schiffer remarked.

Samir AlKareish, a senior expert in energy transition and hydrogen, provided insights into the global hydrogen market. He referenced the latest report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), which indicated that global hydrogen demand reached 97 million tons in 2023, with low-carbon hydrogen playing only a marginal role.

AlKareish emphasized the need for stronger regional and international cooperation to overcome the regulatory, financial, and operational challenges that threaten the global hydrogen project pipeline.

The session concluded with participants reaffirming the importance of collective efforts to push forward Egypt’s green hydrogen ambitions.
