In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said the well is the first during the 11th phase of the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) development in Egypt’s Mediterranean area.
The WDDM is a major offshore natural gas concession situated in deep waters off Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, developed by Burullus Gas Company and other partners.
The ministry added that this phase is expected to increase production by up to 130 mscf/d through the drilling of three new wells.
This phase is also expected to have a significant impact on supporting domestic natural gas production, especially during the current summer season, a peak consumption period.
Additionally, it will help reduce import bills and promote the diversification of natural gas sources.
In 2023, Shell’s subsidiary BG Delta Limited and its partners signed an agreement to develop Phase 10 of the WDDM Marine concession.
Burullus Gas Company, a joint venture, operates the WDDM concession offshore Egypt. It oversees the development and production of deepwater natural gas fields in the Mediterranean to supply both the domestic market and the Egyptian Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plant.
