Those who kiss you hand are laughing at your beard

بوس الايدين ضحك ع الدقون

Bos el edein dehk ala el doqoun

Translation: Those who kiss your hand are laughing at your beard (i.e. pulling your leg).

Meaning: Don't trust those who act obsequiously around you. The habit of kissing the hands of the powerful and the holy is rare now, but a generation or two ago it was still common, especially in the countryside. The urbanisation and industrialisation of the 1960s ended the rural context in which it had flourished for centuries.
