علامة القيامة لما تشرب من الحيط و تشوف النور في الخيط

Alamet el qeyamalammateshrab min el heit we teshouf el nourfelkheit

Translation: The sign of the end of times is when you drink from the wall and see light on a thread.

Meaning: This is an intriguing proverb, and definitely extinct. According to the proverb, the day of reckoning is around the corner when people start having running water and filaments that glow in the dark. But running water, indoor plumbing, and beads that glow in the dark date back centuries, perhaps to Roman times. Paradoxically, the vernacular wording in Egyptian Arabic seems relatively recent — 18th century or so — suggesting that at the time this proverb was in use, it was already outdated.
