The Egyptian Society for Folk Traditions will host its second annual souq this weekend in Cairo's Dokki neighbourhood, in celebration of the country's folk heritage and the women who keep it alive.The souq, which runs 17 to 18 March, will feature crafts made with centuries-old techniques and designs by craftswomen and artists from all over Egypt.
"The idea is to promote the use of authentic handmade items as original gift ideas the weekend before Egypt's Mother's day," explained Nahla Emam, head of the Customs and Traditions department at the High Institute of Folk Arts, as well as a founding member of the society.
Items will include the blue and green signature pottery of Garagous village, Qena, the iconic embroidery of Sinai, vivid and colourful designs from Siwa, and the ancient motifs of Akhmiem, Sohag.
Many designs have been incorporated into updated ornaments and wearable art, demonstrating the adaptability and vitality of the country's folk traditions. It is a unique event not to be missed.
