SCAF press conference: Parliamentary elections on time despite Tahrir clashes

Zeinab El-Gundy, Thursday 24 Nov 2011

Elections will commence 28 November on schedule, says SCAF, with Egyptians urged to vote

Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) members Major General Mokhtar El-Mula and Major General Mamdouh Shahin announced at a press conference in Nasr City, Cairo, that parliamentary elections will be held according to schedule next week

The press conference included members of the High Elections Commission who insist that Egyptian judges are ready to monitor the elections regardless of the circumstances.

El-Mula and Shahin insisted that SCAF was not seeking power, giving examples on the laws SCAF issued in the past months to support the democratic transition in Egypt.

Asked about whether events have shown that the police and army lack the ability to secure the elections, General Al-Mula said police officers are only acting according to law, defending themselves against protesters' violence.
