The revolutionary group April 6 Youth Movement has sent a message congratulating the new parliament on being chosen by the people in the first free and fair elections in over 60 years. However, the movement’s message noted the people’s demands that had yet to be met.
“The people have chosen you to represent them in the parliament, so work on fulfilling their demands and the demands of the revolution,” reads April 6’s message, released on Monday, the first day the new parliament convened.
April 6 stated one of the major unmet demands as the handover of power from the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) to the People’s Assembly until a civilian president is elected. In addition, the movement seeks fair trials for all corrupt members of former president Hosni Mubarak’s regime, and cleansing all government institutions of these old figures. Other demands include independence of Egypt’s legislative body and implementation of social justice between different classes.
