Mudather haunted Burkina Faso's defence

Best goal: Eltaib Mudather goal vs Burkina Faso

A swift passing move by Sudan players released Mudather, who did well to keep going after Hamadou Tall's sliding tackle to shoot side-footed past the diving Daouda Diakite by the near post.

Best player: Eltaib Mudather (Sudan)

The Sudan striker punished the Burkina Faso defence for the naive mistakes they made during the game. The Hilal forward, nicknamed “Karika” after the former Brazilian legend, scored either side of half time to bag the precious three points which lifted the Sudanese into the quarter-finals at the expense of Angola. Exerting lots of efforts throughout the 90 minutes, he proved to be his team’s deadliest weapon against a shaky Burkina Faso defence.

Brief overview

Sudan made the most of Burkina Faso’s sloppy defending to score two goals that sealed their qualification for the quarter finals for the first time since 1970. Eltaib was there to steal the ball from the last defender and open the scoring before wrapping up the win in the 80th minute when he ran onto a long ball, rounded the keeper, and slotted into an empty net.

A second-string Ivory Coast side had no problems sinking Angola with a 2-0 win to maintain their perfect record with three victories, five goals and a clean sheet in 270 minutes. The ageing Palencas Negras failed to match their previous performances in 2008 and 2010, when they reached the quarter finals, as the team solely rely on the strength and talent of Manucho who found little help against the Elephants. It's Time for a change.

Catch of the day: A goalie way out of his goal!

Ivory Coast's Abdelkader Keita played a long ball towards Wilfried Bony who tapped in the second following a blunder by defender Dani Mussunguna, who headed the ball over his own goalkeeper Wilson Pereira, who was almost on the edge of the area, leaving him stranded.
