Sabbahi support blasts through Twitter

Friday 25 May 2012

When presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi heard the news in the early huors of the afternoon, that he had moved from third place to second place after the results from Alexandira were announced, he reportedly bowed down thanking God. Sabbahi has since moved back to third place, with Ahmed Shafiq back in second. Whoever ends up in second place will mostly likely face Mohamed Morsi in runoffs in the first week of June.

A new hashtag was quickly created on microblogging website Twitter: #لو_عملها_حمدين -("What if Hamdeen pulls it off It!" in Arabic). Interesting tweets in both Arabic and English hoping that Sabbahi wins are being tweeted under the fast-circulating hastag. Some users even named Sabbahi as "Twitter's president."

Renowned Egyptian writer Medhat El-Adl tweeted: "Whatever the results turn out to be, we must salute the great fighter Hamdeen Sabbahi and his campaign for the amazing effort they exerted without enough resources or manoeuvers. I salute the Egyptian people who freely chose their candidates."
