After Wafd throws weight behind ex-info minister's presidential candidacy, the Brotherhood denies media reports that it plans to do likewise

A Muslim Brotherhood source has denied that the group had decided to support would-be presidential candidate Mansour Hassan. The source, who preferred anonymity, said the Brotherhood was still considering its options in this regard.

Media reports had suggested that the Muslim Brotherhood, along with the liberal Wafd Party, might throw its weight behind Hassan. The Brotherhood, however, has since stressed that it had yet to decide on a presidential candidate.

"We're waiting to see all the candidates so as to choose the most suitable," the source said, stressing that their candidate of choice must be of an Islamic orientation.

Hassan, who is head of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF)'s advisory council, formally announced his candidacy on Wednesday. Shortly afterward, the Wafd Party, Egypt's oldest liberal party, announced its support for Hassan.

The Wafd Party had joined the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party in the Democratic Alliance electoral coalition prior to recent parliamentary elections. The Wafd Party later decided to contest elections separately, however, but insisted its alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood remained solid, as it was built on common principles.
