The liberal Wafd Party announced its endorsement of Amr Moussa for president of Egypt late Tuesday following a six hour meeting of the party's parliamentary committee and supreme council.

Tarek El-Tohami, a member of the supreme council, said Moussa was chosen because of his family's roots in the party and he was the only the presidential candidate to visit the party.

Amr Moussa is expected to visit the party's headquarters in Giza Wednesday.

The Wafd Party earlier endorsed Mansour Hassan’s presidential bid but the former minister of information subsequently withdrew from the race, citing internal disputes within the party. Many observers were surprised when Moussa was not the party's first choice candidate.
