The campaign team for leftist labour activist and rights lawyer, Khaled Ali, announced Friday that it has succeeded in collecting the required 30,000 recommendations from citizens across Egypt to run for president.

Ali had collected the registration papers from the High Presidential Elections Commission (HPEC) on Thursday.

The official Facebook page to support Ali for president created an event titled "We shall fulfill our dream" calling on Ali's supporters to join him in a rally Saturday at 9:00am in front of the (HPEC) as he heads to submit his application.

Although he barely meets the minimum age requirement (40), at 41 the rights lawyer and labor activist, Ali, has held senior positions in prominent legal rights offices, such as the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights and the Hisham Mubarak Law Centre.

Ali announced his intention to run for president in late February, surprising many and stirring concerns that his bid might fragment votes among Egypt's revolutionaries.

Electoral rules for potential candidates require them to secure the support of 30 elected Members of Parliament, collect the recommendation signatures of 30,000 Egyptian citizens from at least 15 Egyptian governorates or secure the backing of a political party that holds at least one seat in parliament.

The registration period for filing candidacy applications opened Saturday and is open until 8 April, according to Egypt's Higher Presidential Elections Commission.

Presidential elections will take place 23-24 May, with the president named 21 June after a run-off vote 16-17 June, if necessary.
