Egypt's sole hammer thrower starts his Rio de Janeiro Olympic bid on Wednesday while rider Karim El-Zoghby will be seeking to make history and reach the equestrian show jumping final after some fine displays in the first two qualifying rounds.

Hassan Abdel-Gawad will feature in the qualifying round of the men's hammer throw, shouldering the country's hopes following the knee injury which hit hammer thrower Mostafa El-Gamal ahead of the Olympics.

Abdel-Gawad is ranked seventh in the world this year with a throw of 78.39 metres.

Rider El-Zoghby qualified for the third qualifying round on Tuesday after finishing 42nd on the individual leaderboard of the second round with a penalty score of nine points (one time and eight jumping penalties).

Although it was nowhere near his flawless display in the first round, El-Zoghby still got the job done to continue his bid towards reaching the final as he takes part in the third and final qualifying round on Wednesday.

Sprinter Fatma El-Sharnoubi also plays in the first round of the women's 800m, Inas Mostafa takes part in the qualifying round of the women's 69kg freestyle wrestling and Maha Gouda features in the preliminary round of the women's 10m platform diving.
