Om Kalthoum Museum and House of Arabic Music (Beyt Al-Ghena' Al-Araby) - which are divisions of the Cultural Development Fund (CDF) - are accepting submissions by singers for the Al-Sawt Al-Dahaby competition (Golden Voice), which awards the winner a grand prize of LE10,000.
The aspiring and experienced singers, who have to be Egyptian nationals between the age of 18 and 38, are required to present works from the Arabic music repertoire.
Submissions are accepted at the premises of the CDF, located at the Cairo Opera grounds, until 31 August.
The jury will include singer and director of House of Arabic Music Mohsen Farouk, musicians Amir Abdelmeguid, Nadia Mostafa, Hany Shenouda, alongside soprano Taheya Shams El-Din, Mohamed Alaa, and music researcher Einas Galal-Eddin.
The prize of LE10,000 will be given to the first place winner, along with a free scholarship to study at the House of Arabic Music.
Second prize is LE7000, while third place receives LE5000, both also receiving the scholarship.
Fourth and fifth places will receive a six month scholarship, and those coming sixth to tenth place will be honoured with a certificate.
The House of Arabic Music is located in the historical Al-Amir Bashtak Palace that was renovated by the Culture Development Fund in 2007, situated in Al-Moez area of Old Cairo. The palace functions as a music centre, offering classes and workshops and a curriculum for vocal training and musical instruments.
