In the presence of the President of the National Council for Women Dr. Maya Morsy, and UN Women Country Representative Blerta Aliko, the feature film Between Two Seas was screened at a special event held yesterday by the National Council for Women and UN Women, in celebration of the film’s success during its festival tour.
The event was attended by a number of representatives from UN agencies, governmental organizations, and embassies in addition to the film’s cast Fatma Adel, Yara Goubran, Mahmoud Fares, as well as the young actress Ahd, and the executive producer Abdel-Rahman Al-Garawany (Axeer).
Morsy expressed her excitement over the success of the film and the awards it has won from a number of festivals at the local, international, and regional levels. She also congratulated the whole team behind this unique film that succeeded in tackling problems faced in the society, noting the important message delivered by the film and its role in changing the negative and harmful traditions that harm women. Additionally, she thanked all those involved in the production of the film for such a professional product.
Morsy also stated that during the next stage, the council will cooperate with the Ministry of Culture led by Dr. Ines Abdel-Dayem to screen the film in the cultural palaces across all governorates to reach a wider audience.
“Thanks to the National Council for Women and Axeer for the incredible partnership that succeeded in producing such a strong movie that would help us create behavioral and social change. Special thanks to our development partners, whom, without them. this movie would not have been possible,” stated Blerta Aiko.
“Our vision in AXEER is and has always been using media as a vector of change. Thus, partnering up with UN women and The National Council of Women has always paid off over the years through many successful and impactful campaigns. We see our first feature film “Between Two Seas” as the crown jewel of this great partnership and we are hoping that it will help in raising awareness and impacting the society,” explained Abdel Rahman Khedr; CEO Axeer.
Alaa Karkouti, CEO of MAD Solutions, said, “We are very pleased to be collaborating with Axeer on releasing Between Two Seas to the audience and handling the film’s distribution and promotion in the Arab world. We are proud of the success the film has achieved so far at Arab and international festivals, and it is set to be commercially released in cinemas soon.”
It is worth noting that the film succeeded in winning four international awards in Aswan Women’s International Film Festival and Brooklyn Film Festival. It was also selected as the opening film for Karama Human Rights Film Festival in Beirut.
The film is a joint collaboration between the National Council for Women, UN Women, Axeer, and development partners and is part of their belief in the importance of cinema in changing negative perceptions towards women in different societies. It is written by Mariam Naoum, directed by Anas Tolba, produced by Axeer while the marketing and distribution is managed by MAD Solutions.
While on a short visit to her home village, a small rural island near Cairo, Zahra’s daughter is exposed to a tragic accident. Following this incident, Zahra persists on getting her daughter’s right and insists on not only continuing her education, but also benefiting her community. The film sheds light on different societal issues faced by women, especially in rural areas.
