In a press release issued on 9 December, Guinness World Records (GWR) revealed the five films and TV series that brought in the highest revenues in 2019.

The list comprises Frozen 2, Joker, Avengers: Endgame, Bohemian Rhapsody and Game of Thrones.

According to the GWR, the Disney production Frozen 2 witnessed the highest-grossing opening weekend for an animated film, grossing $358 million as of 25 November. The record comes within five Disney films that have reached an accumulative USD 1 billion at the global box office, including Toy Story 4 and Avengers: Endgame.

The controversial film Joker has become the first R-rated film to exceed $1 billion at the worldwide box office as of 25 November 2019, beating previous record-holder Deadpool (1916) by Disney, which made $780 million. 

The three-hour star-studded Avengers: Endgame was the highest-grossing film at the global box office, unseating Avatar (2009), which had held the record for 10 years. The 22nd release in the Marvel cinematic universe grossed $2.7 billion at the global box office as of 21 July 2019 and had the highest-grossing opening weekend for a 3D movie at the global box office with over $1 billion.

As for the Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie telling the story of British rock band Queen and its front-man Freddy Mercury (played by actor Rami Malek), grossed $773 million (£601 million) at the worldwide box office as of 17 January 2019, breaking two records: the highest-grossing biographical movie and the highest-grossing music biopic. 

Finally, TV series Game of Thrones, which reached its eighth and final season in 2019, had the biggest TV premiere.

HBO revealed that 17.4 million people watched the episode on their subscription TV service and on their HBO GO and HBO NOW streaming apps within 24 hours of airing. Game of Thrones also broke another record when it won 12 Emmy Awards in 2019, bringing its total haul to 59 since its premier in 2011, the highest number of Emmy awards for any TV series.
