Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture launches playwriting, caricature and poetry competitions

Each of the competitions offers monetary prizes to three winners

Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture has launched three new competitions: in playwriting, caricature (cartoons) and poetry.

The competitions aim to create opportunities for young people who are staying at home.

Each offers monetary prizes for the winning works: EGP 25,000 for the first prize, EGP 15,000 for second, and EGP 10,000 for third.

The applications should be sent to the Supreme Council of Culture, located in the Cairo Opera House grounds, by post, or delivered in person. Applications are open now and should reach the council by 30 April.

The file should also include a photocopy of the applicant’s national ID card, a printed brief biography, a printed application form, and a bank account number.

Playwriting competition

Applicants should hold Egyptian nationality.

They are required to submit four copies of one play written by the applicant (in addition to the documents specified in the general rules).

The work submitted should not be published in any form (in whole or in part) and it should have not been submitted to any other competition prior to the announcement of the Supreme Council of Culture competition’s results.

Caricature competition

The competition is organised with the guidance of the Egyptian Caricature Association.

The competition theme is exposing the problem of bullying, while searching for solutions to fight it.

The competition accepts up to three submissions of creative works in the form of a caricature (or a cartoon) that expresses the theme, done in colour or black and white, on an A3-size sheet. The documents specified in the general rules should accompany the submission. 

Applicants should not be older than 35.

Poetry competition

The poetry should be written in the Egyptian dialect (vernacular). It should be one work or several works, with a minimum of 30 pages and a maximum of 50 pages. Applicants should not be older than 40.

Four printed copies of the work should be submitted by the applicant.

The work submitted should not be published in any form (in whole or in part) and it should not have been submitted to any other competition prior to the announcement of the Supreme Council of Culture competition’s results. The documents specified in the general rules should accompany the submission.
