Egypt has succeeded in registering handmade weaving in Upper Egypt on the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage list, the culture ministry revealed in an official press release.

Handmade weaving was classified under the "In Need of Urgent Safeguarding" List 2020.

"The registration was possible due to the efforts of [both] Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs," reads the statement.

Upper Egypt's handmade weaving is not the first national heritage to enter the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

In 2019, "date palm, knowledge, skills, traditions and practices" represented by Egypt among other Arab countries entered the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The same list also includes Egypt's Tahteeb, stick game which was registered in 2016 and Al-Sirah Al-Hilaliyyah epic (2008).

Egypt's traditional hand puppetry Al-Aragoz was registered as Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2019.
