Egyptian accordion player and singer Youssra El-Hawary releases new music video 'On the Street' in the run-up to Friday concert at Cairo's El-Geneina Theatre

Youssra El-Hawary has released a new music video for her song Fil Sharaa ('On the Street') that reflects on Cairo street culture in terms of violence, harassment and poverty. In the end, she sarcastically states that, in spite of all of this, a man and a woman can't kiss each other in public.

El-Hawary took the internet by storm when she released her hit music video El-Sur ('The Wall'), which shows her playing an accordion and singing Walid Taher's lyrics to a poor man urinating on the walls. The entire video was shot against the backdrop of the army-built concrete barricades in downtown Cairo, over which local artists painted images of open streets in protest.

Her music video won first place in the Fair Play International Music Awards, which is given to young musicians who stand against corruption.

While her solo project began recently, the young artist is also a founder of the Choir Project and an actress and singer in the Al-Tamy Theatre Group.

The accordion player will be performing on Friday, 2 November, at the Geneina Theatre, where she will be joined by Shadi El-Husseini (keyboards), Ayman Mabrouk (percussion), Sedki Sakhr (harmonica and recorder) and Carl Capelle (mandola).

Programme:

The performance will be on 2 November at 8:30pm at Cairo's El-Geneina Theatre.
