Aspiring artists have the opportunity to attend a collage workshop by prominent contemporary artist Hany Rashed at Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Centre in Cairo, starting 10 June.

Collage is an art form that basically entails cutting and pasting different materials together. Rashed's technique goes a step further; he adds paint to the equation. Through blending images from magazines or newspapers with drawing and painting, the artist is able to create a multi-layered piece.

The workshop aims to guide participants through this experimental technique of combining collage with painting, and harness an interactive atmosphere among the participants to trigger creative ideas.

As an art form, collage first appeared at the hands of iconic artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, at the onset of the 20th century. Collage has also emerged in the works of Egyptian painters over the years, including distinguished artists – Huda Lutfi, Hisham El-Zeiny and Mounir Canaan, among others.

Hany Rashed has been mentored by prominent painter Mohamed Abla. Rashed's artwork mostly tackles pop culture and is often tined with a sense of humour. From abstract art to monoprints, Rahed's work is bold and experimental, and is one of the most famed artists of his generation. He has exhibited his work in major cities across the globe, including Dubai, London and Berlin.

This will be Hany Rashed's second collage workshop held at Darb 1718. The first session was held in the summer of 2011.
