Korean Ambassador to Egypt Yeo-Cheol Yoon introduces the three Korean chefs
The “Taste of Korea: Egyptian Bread and Korean Salt”, organised by the Korean Cultural Centre, took place at one of Cairo’s five-star hotels last Wednesday.
Introducing the event, the Korean Ambassador to Egypt Yeo-Cheol Yoon said, “Let me first thank you all for your keen interest in the Korean food or appetite for it! Tonight, we are taking on the theme of food which, I believe, everybody here loves. I am also happy to share this pleasant outdoor evening with all of you.”
“One of the surprises I had since my arrival in Cairo was that there are so many Egyptians who enjoy Korean cuisine. I had the notion that Korean food can be too spicy and may not suit the taste of non-Koreans,” he said.
“However, as a Korean ambassador, I am grateful that many Egyptians love Korean food and even more, they want to learn how to cook it! It also makes me wonder what makes Korean cuisine so appealing to you,” Yoon continued.
You may like Korean food like kimchi and other fermented foods because they are good for your health while utilizing natural flavours with colourful presentations,” he added.
“I hope you will all explore and enjoy Korean dishes and spread the news of Korean food throughout Egypt. I will check my Facebook tonight,” the ambassador concluded.
Three expert Korean chefs were invited to present the cuisine: Baek Seung Ho, Chu Ji Soo, and Oh Jung Hwa.
Baek Seung Ho is the head chef at the residence of the ambassador in Maadi and has caused admiration and jealousy of the ambassador’s guests with his creative fusion of traditional Korean and Western cuisine.
They showed the attendees how they can cook one of Korea’s favorite dishes from Egyptian chick peas and how anyone can utilize food laying around to make a Korean dish.
Present at the event were Soha Bahgat, the advisor to the Minister of Tourism, Hala El-Khateeb, the general manager of the Egyptian Tourism Chamber Union, as well as media personalities such as actor and presenter of the food TV programme Al-Akeel Murad Makram.
Other influential food experts like bloggers and social media big shots also attended the celebration.
The event comes at the end of a two-month Korean cooking course hosted by the Korean Cultural Centre, which was supervised by director Sang Keun Yang to introduce Korean food and culinary culture to Egypt.
