The 2015 song, ‘Atshan Ya Zeina’ (‘I'm Yearning, Zeina’), by Egyptian independent band Gawy made its way to the track list of the American action sci-fi film Black Widow released internationally and across Egyptian cinemas earlier this month.
Produced by Marvel Studios, the 2021 film is directed by Cate Shortland and stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour.
The song was written by Mohamed Abd El-Latif and Mostafa Taxi to the lyrics of Ahmed Mohamed El-Gaml.
The song was composed as an experiment between friends prior to forming a band. Sung in the dialect of Upper Egypt and based on a folkloric theme, the track became very popular, which encouraged the young musicians to create Gawy.
Later on, Atshan Ya Zeina became part of the band's only album, Albek Yesaa, released a year later.
The movie Black Widow follows Natasha Romanoff who “confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises,” reads the brief published on IMDb.
