Streaming giant Netflix commemorated World Book Day, which falls on 23 April, by releasing a never-before-seen image from its upcoming animated feature ‘My Father’s Dragon.’

My Father’s Dragon is scheduled for release in 2022, however, an exact date has not been set yet.

The upcoming American-Irish 2D-animated adventure movie takes the youngest audience to “mystical castles far far away; fantastical worlds filled with adventure; cats that can sing, dance, and rhyme,” Netflix’s press release reveals.

Inspired by Ruth Stiles Gannett’s Newbery-winning children’s book My Father’s Dragon, “the film follows a boy named ‘Elmer’ struggling to cope after a move to the city with his mother. Elmer runs away in search of Wild Island and a young dragon who waits to be rescued. Elmer’s adventures introduce him to ferocious beasts, a mysterious island, and the friendship of a lifetime.”

The film is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Nora Twomey and stars Jacob Tremblay, Gaten Matarazzo, Golshifteh Farahani, Dianne Wiest, Rita Moreno, Chris O’Dowd, Judy Greer, Alan Cumming, Yara Shahidi, Jackie Earle Haley, Mary Kay Place, Leighton Meester, Spence Moore II, Adam Brody, Charlyne Yi, Maggie Lincoln, Jack Smith, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ian McShane.

Apart of My Father’s Dragon, Netflix is also readying to release Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio and Wendy Rogers’ ‘The Magician’s Elephant, which is based on two-time Newbery Award winning author Kate DiCamillo’s classic novel.

World Book Day is an annual event that has been organised since 1995 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation to promote reading, publishing, and copyrights.
