Spanish artist Xavier Puigmartì’s minimalistic paintings will go on display at Mashrabia gallery starting 19 February.

Tilted in French ‘Les souvenirs ne sont pas à vendre’ (The souvernirs are not for sale), Puigmarti’s work brings to mind primitive mural drawings.

With fictional figures at play, and a multitude of miniature symbols and icons, the large works invite you to take a closer look, evoking the past and the present at the same time.

“The hundreds of characters are set in horizontal stripes like the remote pharaonic paintings, giving a timeless sensation,” Mashrabia’s description of the work reads.

This is the artist’s seventh exhibition at the gallery.

Puigmarti is a multidisciplinary artist born in 1952. He works with drawing, painting and video.

Since 1982 he has been exhibiting his works in solo exhibitions between Cairo and Spain, as well as internationally in group exhibitions including shows in Paris, Spain, USA, Mexico and Amsterdam.

Programme:
The exhibition opens on 19 February and will run till 16 March
Mashrabia gallery, 8 Champollion street, Downtown, Cairo
