Art Alert: Cairo's Medrar exhibits Swiss cinema experiments from the 60s to today

Ahram Online , Saturday 3 Feb 2018

The exhibition features 21 films and will include artist talks at Medrar and Cimatheque

An exhibition of film and video art from Switzerland titled Film Implosion! will open at Medrar 8 Febraury, showcasing a collection of 21 rarely presented films, curated by François Bovier and Adeena Mey.

The exhibition comes in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Pro Helvetia Cairo —which supports it — and provides a panorama of genres and practices in Swiss experimental cinema within the mediums of film and video from the 1960ʼs until today.

The exhibition was first shown in Switzerland at Fri Art Kunsthalle (2015-2016) and includes films by André Lehmann, Bernhard Luginbühl, Clemens Klopfenstein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean-Luc Godard, Tony Morgan, and Urs Breitenstein, among others.

According to the description by Medrar, “it recalls the fundamentals of video art language that we know today, traced back to earlier expressive forms against the conventions of classical cinema … Ranging from abstract animation to collage practices and documentary mode, the featured works share a desire to deconstruct the conventions of filmic language and reinvent representation.”

While the exhibition will run till mid-March, on 10 February Medrar will host a conversation with the artist Urs Breitenstein, screening his collection of works by Werner von Mutzenbecher and André Lehmann.

Cimatheque will host a presentation of films by Robert Beavers and Gregory Markopoulos on 7pm, Friday, 9 February, and the closing film screening of Geschichte der Nacht (1978), in the presence of its director, Clemens Klopfenstein.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, 8 February, at 7pm, and runs till 15 March at Medrar
