Artist Marwa Adel will have an exhibition titled The Dark Forest at Gallery Misr, opening on 25 November.

In her latest solo show, Adel will present a collection of digitally edited photographs which explore the conflict between individual and social constructions of identity.

Her images explore how individuals strive to be socially accepted and validated, and in the process lose their sense of self and authenticity. She imagines the world as a dark forest of socially contracted illusions.

Born in 1984 in Cairo, where she is based, Adel's work is concerned with the human body, identity, cultural and social taboos.

She uses the human body to reflect forms of existence that are in contradiction, and to explore the relationship between form and essence.

Adel holds a PhD in visual communication, and is currently a lecturer in the advertising department at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Helwan University.

Adel has held various solo exhibitions and participated in group domestic and international exhibitions and has won domestic and international awards for her bold and powerful work.

The exhibition opens on Sunday 25 November at 7pm
Gallery Misr, 4a Ibn Zenki Street, Zamalek, Cairo
